Privacy Policy — Beach Days

Last updated: 12.09.2026

The short version

Beach Days has no user accounts and no advertising. We don't ask for your name, email address, or any other personal detail, and we have no way of identifying you personally.

If you use Beach Days in a web browser — the information pages and the app itself, both at beachdays.uk — we use Google Analytics to understand how it is used. This sets cookies and you will be asked to accept or reject them when you first visit. If you reject them, everything works exactly the same.

If you use the iOS or Android app, it records nothing at all about how you use it — no analytics, no tracking, no identifiers.

If you share your location with Beach Days, that location stays on your device and is never sent to us or anyone else.

The rest of this policy explains all of this in the detail that data protection law requires.

Who we are

Beach Days ("we", "us") is operated by Michael Clover, based in the United Kingdom.

For any privacy question, contact: hello@beachdays.uk

We are the data controller for the processing described below.

Website and web app: cookies and analytics

Everything served at beachdays.uk — the information pages and the Beach Days app itself, which runs in your browser — uses Google Analytics 4, provided by Google, to understand how it is used: which pages are popular, how people arrive, roughly where in the world they are, and whether they return.

This uses cookies. When you first visit, you will be asked whether to accept analytics cookies. You can accept or reject them, and you can change your mind at any time using the cookie settings link in the site footer. Rejecting them does not limit any feature of the site.

If you accept, Google Analytics may collect:

Google Analytics 4 does not log or store full IP addresses.

We use this information only in aggregate, to understand whether the service is useful and where to improve it. We do not attempt to identify individual visitors and we do not combine analytics data with any other information.

Google acts as our data processor for this. Google may transfer and process data outside the United Kingdom under its own safeguards. You can read Google's privacy policy at policies.google.com/privacy, and you can opt out of Google Analytics entirely across all websites using Google's opt-out browser add-on.

Analytics is the only thing we collect in the browser. Beach Days reads beach information from our servers — tide models, facilities, beach rules — and that access is read-only in the browser exactly as it is in the installed app: the site cannot write anything back to our database.

Legal basis: your consent, given through the cookie banner. You may withdraw it at any time.

iOS and Android app: no analytics

The app you install from the App Store or Google Play contains no analytics, no tracking, and no identifiers of any kind. It does not use Google Analytics, cookies, advertising software, or any third-party analytics service. This is a property of the installed app specifically — if you are using Beach Days in a browser, the section above applies instead.

The installed app records nothing about how you use it. It does not log which beaches you open, which features you use, or when you use them. There is no device identifier, advertising identifier, session identifier, or account.

The app reads beach information from our servers — tide models, facilities, beach rules — and its access is read-only. It cannot write anything back.

If this ever changes — for example, if we add anonymous usage measurement to understand which features are worth developing — we will update this policy before it takes effect.

Your location in the app

If you grant location permission, the app uses your device's location to:

Your location never leaves your device. It is held only in the app's temporary memory while the app is open, is not saved to your device's storage, and is not transmitted to us or to any third party. Closing the app discards it.

Granting location permission is entirely optional — the app works fully without it. You can withdraw permission at any time in your device settings.

Information sent automatically when you use the service

To show maps, tides, and weather, we contact a small number of external services. As with visiting any website, those services can see your device's IP address and the technical details of the request. We do not attach any identifier to these requests, and we do not receive or store this information ourselves.

Service What it receives Why
Supabase Beach identifiers; your IP address Stores the beach data (tide models, facilities, beach rules) that the app reads. The app's access is read-only
Mapbox The map area being viewed; your IP address Provides satellite map imagery
Google Maps (Android) / Apple Maps (iOS) The map area being viewed; your IP address Provides the map on the beach list screen. Your position is not sent to them.
Open-Meteo The coordinates of the beach you are viewing; your IP address Provides the weather forecast
UK Hydrographic Office (via our server) A tide station reference; your IP address Provides official tide predictions

Each provider has its own privacy policy governing what it does with IP addresses and request data.

What we store on your device

In the iOS or Android app: nothing. No cached preferences, no saved settings, no local database, no cookies. Your filter selections and saved beaches are cleared when you close the app.

In your browser, at beachdays.uk: the analytics cookies described above, and only if you accept them; a small record of your cookie choice itself, so we don't ask you again on every visit; and the beaches you mark as saved, so they are still there when you come back. The saved-beach list and the cookie choice are held by your browser on your device only — they are never sent to us, and clearing your browser data removes them.

How long we keep information

Google Analytics data is retained for 14 months and then automatically deleted.

Our servers also store beach data (tide models, facility locations, beach rules) and cached tide predictions. None of this relates to individual users.

Sharing your information

We do not sell or rent personal information.

Google Analytics data is processed by Google as described above. We do not share information with advertising networks or data brokers.

Children

Beach Days is suitable for all ages. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and the iOS and Android app collects none from anyone. Analytics in the browser is anonymous and aggregate.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, and object to the processing of your personal data, and to complain to a supervisory authority. You may also withdraw consent for analytics cookies at any time.

Because we hold no information that identifies you, we may be unable to locate any data relating to you specifically. If you have a request, contact hello@beachdays.uk and we will respond within one month.

You may complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

Data outside the UK

Some providers listed above operate servers outside the United Kingdom, including Google. Where data is transferred abroad, it is processed under those providers' own safeguards, including standard contractual clauses where applicable.

Accuracy and safety

Beach Days provides tide and weather information for planning purposes. It is modelled from official data sources but is not a navigational or safety-critical tool. Always check local signage, official tide tables, and lifeguard advice before entering the water. Beach rules such as dog restrictions are taken from published council orders and were correct when checked, but may change — check local signage.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy — for example, if we introduce user accounts, advertising, or subscriptions in future. If we do, we will update the date at the top and, where the change is significant, tell you before it takes effect.
